What is CLIL

CLIL describes an evolving approach to teaching and learning where subjects are taught and studied through the medium of a non-native language.

Why CLIL

The CLIL approach develops confident learners and enhances academic cognitive processes and communication skills. It encourages intercultural understanding and community values. Learners become more sensitive to vocabulary and ideas presented in their first language as well as in the target language and they gain more extensive and varied vocabulary.

What does TKT: CLIL test

TKT: CLIL is an optional extension module of the TKT. It tests knowledge about the subject teaching in a target language and the learning, thinking and language skills, which are developed across different curriculum subjects. It tests knowledge of how to plan lessons as well as knowledge of activites and resources used to support a CLIL approach. It also tests knowledge of teaching strategies and how assessment is carried out in CLIL contexts.

What does TKT:CLIL not test

The CLIL course is designed to offer maximum flexibility and accessibility for candidates and therefore DOES NOT TEST subject-specific knowledge nor include complusory teaching practice. It does not test teaching ability. However it promotes quality lesson planning, the use of scaffolding in long term planning, classroom management tips and the use of language to stimulate interest in specific subjects and increase student engagement.

What is the Teaching Knowledge Test course?

Specialist Modules:
An introduction to specialist areas of English language teaching
  • TKT CLIL - Content and Language Integrated Learning
  • TKT YL - Young Learners
Modules:
A test of knowledge about the principles and practice of English language teaching
  • Module 1 - Language and background to language learning and teaching
  • Module 2 - Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching
  • Module 3 - Managing the teaching and learning process

TKT tests knowledge about the teaching of English to speakers of other languages, as well as the teaching of other subjects in a non-native language. These knowledges include concepts related to language, language use and the background to and practice of language teaching and learning and is assessed by means of objective format tests, which are simple to administer and to take. TKT offers candidates a step in their professional development as teachers and can be taken at any stage in a teacher's career.

Introduction

The Cambridge TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) modules are a set of tests of professional knowledge for teachers and language teachers. These tests are thought to verify the teaching abilities of speakers of other languages. They fulfil the international standards and assure the necessary knowledge that a candidate needs.
The CLIL module is aimed at certifying knowledge about the elements of the CLIL methodology, which consists of teaching and learning through the medium of a non-native language.
International House Palermo offers TKT teacher training in a eight-week face-to-face format at the centre or in flexible course format.

Why take TKT?

It is the ideal way of improving pedagogic skills and find out more information about background to language learning and teaching, planning lessons and use of resources for language teaching, and also about managing the teaching and learning process.

How do I prepare for it?

TKT consists of three general modules, which can be taken at the same time or separately, and four more specific modules. Each of them has a different grade of difficulty and targets different areas of English language. A test has 80 questions and the candidate must select and mark the correct answer on a computerised answer sheet.
The candidate does not need to have taken English language examinations or entry requirements. The candidate must have a level of English at least equivalent to the Preliminary English Test or level B1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for languages.

Candidate Feedback:

- My TKT course has been interesting, useful and why not... relaxing!

- I met other English teachers and compared ideas with them. I explored and discussed different and new ways of teaching.

- I'm sure that at the end of the 3rd and last module I'll be able to use my "professional tools" better than before!

- Jessica our teacher was able to create a nice and friendly atmosphere and moreover she presented each unit and topic in a clear and efficient way.
